From rookies fresh out of college and international stars getting their first starts in North America to veterans embarking on new beginnings, we’ve highlighted 10 intriguing players to watch as the PWHL gets underway.

The Toronto Maple Leafs placed struggling goaltender Ilya Samsonov on waivers Sunday, the team announced.

He last appeared for the Maple Leafs on Dec. 29, surrendering a 6-5 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

If Samsonov clears, he’ll report to AHL Toronto.

The Maple Leafs undisputed No. 1 goaltender last season, putting up career-bests in save percentage (.919) and goals-against average (2.33), Samsonov earned a one-year, $3.55 million contract in arbitration with Toronto.

However, in his second year with the Maple Leafs, he’s struggled right out of the gate, posting career-worst numbers with a .862 save percentage and a 3.94 goals-against average. He’s won just five games of his 15 this season.

Selected 22nd overall in 2015 by the Washington Capitals, he spent three seasons with the team before signing with the Maple Leafs as a free agent.
