Queensland mining industry leader dies after short battle with illness


The former boss of the Queensland Resources Council has died, less than a month after he was diagnosed with an illness.

Michael Roche served as the head of the resource industry’s peak body for 11 years, before stepping down in 2016.

He was replaced by former federal politician Ian Macfarlane, who paid tribute on Wednesday to his predecessor’s “tireless commitment and passion for the resources sector”.

“Michael was a fearless leader and vocal advocate for the sector who championed new ideas that changed the industry forever,” Mr Macfarlane said.
