Nick Kyrgios has hit back at accusations of being a ‘rat’ by tennis legend Boris Becker, with the Australian labelling the icon a ‘doughnut’ and “obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed.”

Becker took aim at Kyrgios over the Australian’s attacks on fellow professionals in recent weeks, with Kyrgios slamming the ‘selfish’ actions of rivals who took place in the pandemic-hit Adria Tour organised by Novak Djokovic.

Most recently, Kyrgios blasted rival Alexander Zverev for publicly partying days after promising to isolate after participating in the competition.

Kyrgios slammed Zverev for selfishness in an Instagram post.

“So I wake up and I see more controversial things happening all over the world. One that stuck out for me was seeing ‘Sacha’ Zverev again man, again, again, how selfish can you be?” he asked.

“If you have the audacity to f***ing put out a tweet that you made your management write on your behalf saying you’re going to self-isolate for 14 days and apologising to the f***ing general public for putting their health at risk, at least have the audacity to stay inside for 14 days, my god.

“Jesus man, pissing me off, this tennis world is pissing me off, seriously how selfish can you all get?”

Tennis great Boris Becker reacted to Kyrgios’s attack on Zverev by taking to social media.

Becker tweeted: “Don’t like no #rats ! Anybody telling off fellow sportsman/woman is no friend of mine! Look yourself in the mirror and think your better than us…”

Becker tagged Kyrgios in the post, leading the Aussie to reply: “For goodness sake Boris, I’m not competing or trying to throw anyone under the bus. It’s a global pandemic and if someone is as idiotic as Alex to do what he has done, I’ll call him out for it. Simple.”

Becker was unhappy with Kyrgios publicly critiquing the actions of his fellow pros, with the retired great writing: “There is an unspoken understanding between athletes! Whatever happens on the court stays there including the lockers! Nobody will talk about it … #respect #sport #fellowship”

The dialogue continued, with Becker tweeting: “We all live in the pandemic called #Covid_19 ! It’s terrible and it killed to many lives…we should protect our families/loved ones and follow the guidelines but still don’t like #rats @NickKyrgios”

Kyrgios responded: “Rats? For holding someone accountable? Strange way to think of it champion, I’m just looking out for people. WHEN my family and families all over the world have respectfully done the right thing. And you have a goose waving his arms around, imma say something.”

Kyrgios went one further, writing that Becker “is a bigger doughnut than I thought. can hit a volley, obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed though.”

Becker then wrote: “Your funny guy (sic)….how is it down under? Respect all the guidelines?”

The Aussie then responded: “Haha nah bro I’m good, don’t act like you’re my friend now because you got sat down.”

Becker looked to defuse the situation with this statement: “I really would like to se @NickKyrgios fulfill his potential and win a grandslam! He would be an incredible role model for for the youth of the world addressing the issues of equality/race/heritage! Man up buddy and deliver!”
