For the second-straight Test at the Ahmedabad venue – the world’s biggest – the result was decided in much less than five days – after the third Test lasted a mere two days.

Kohli reprimands unaware Rahane!

After England’s impressive victory in the first Test, the visitors have fallen apart in disastrous fashion, losing the next three tests in emphatic fashion.

The second Test defeat was by over 300 runs, the third by 10 wickets, and the finale by an innings and 25 runs.

England’s inability to play spin throughout the series will prove a major talking point in the days and weeks to come.

The visitors have scored more than 200 just once in their last six innings.

Root stood tall for England as he topped the batting chart with 368 runs including 218 the opening Test — his 100th — that England won convincingly.

Spin accounts for all 10 England wickets

But Ashwin and Axar, with 32 wickets and 27 wickets for the series respectively, tore the English batting line-ups to shreds.

Meanwhile England took seven wickets in the final Test from seamers, and just two from spinners. The gulf in ability in playing the turning ball was clear.

Sir Andrew Strauss told Channel 4: “You are dispirited, aren’t you? You are hoping for England to learn their lessons and show some fight and we didn’t see a lot of that.”

He bemoaned technical problems in the England batting approach to spin, saying: “There are frailties there that have been exploited by some Indian spin bowling on surfaces that have really suited the spinners. England came into the series very confident having won 2-0 in Sri Lanka but those frailties got exposed.

“Steve Waugh used to speak about mental disintegration. It wasn’t about sledging but about the persistence of the India spinners. England’s batsmen had no real answer. India are a very good side and showed their superiority.”

However, credit must go to the hosts for their continued dominance – and for their tactical and mental effort in the wake of a disappointing start to the Test series.

India has now won 13 straight Test series at home, a record span dating back to 2013.

They have lost just two of their last 38 Tests at home – against England in this series opener, and against Australia in Pune 2017.

This year’s loss was described by India captain Virat Kohli as an ‘aberration’.

He said: “It was a bit of an aberration in the way we play as a team. It was a hiccup and England outplayed us. We then bowled and fielded with a lot more intensity [after that].”

The series win moves India into the number one spot on the Test rankings.

The simple truth is that they are utterly dominant on home soil. England are just the latest victims.

Sheer dominance from the boys! A marvelous series win at home. Congratulations Team India on qualifying to the World Test Championship final! Jai Hind🇮🇳 #INDvENG

What a pathetic batting performance by England. Losing two test matches in total five days #INDvsENG

The bowling has been excellent but the batting is listless too. I suspect the series was lost in the mind long before this innings started.

India have been outstanding in this series! England have some big questions to ask themselves. From team selection to how they have gone about their batting. Rotation system doesn’t work. The ECB have some serious thinking to do. Well played India. 👏👏👍🏆🏆 pic.twitter.com/JfracnSiKI

This has a feeling of getting very ugly today … #INDvENG

India have been far too good … the last 3 Tests they have absolutely hammered England … If they can win in England they are without doubt the best Test team of this era … but that will take some doing against the swinging ball … #INDvENG
