Gucci draws fashion into abortion debate with ‘my body my choice’ clothes

If you’re going to make a bold statement about abortion rights, there’s no bigger stage than Rome, the home of the Vatican and the Catholic Church.

And so it was that Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, chose the eternal city and his cruise collection to draw fashion into the latest battle over abortion right beings being waged in the US and reverberating worldwide.

Models in the show, held on Tuesday, wore garments featuring phrases associated with the pro-choice and gender-equality movements including “my body my choice” and “Chime for Change”, the latter the name of Gucci’s own gender equality campaign, which was launched in 2013 by Beyoncé and Salma Hayek.

Tellingly, the pieces with the slogans include menswear, a possible statement by Michele to urge more men to speak out on the issue, since most abortions result from heterosexual sexual relationships.
