Carla Zampatti shows the ‘new kids’ how it’s done

It’s taken half a century in the fashion industry for veteran designer Carla Zampatti to stage a show on the scale she did on Wednesday night.

Zampatti, 76, showed more than 80 looks as part of the Grand Showcase, a $250,000 honour bestowed on one designer each year at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.

The show opened with a statement of red head-to-toe looks, then Zampatti’s signature animal print, before climaxing with an evening wear section filled with more sequins than last weekend’s Mardi Gras.

There was also plenty in the show for the career women who have been dressed by Zampatti, a companion of the Order of Australia, for 50 years, with a series of pieces in blues and on-trend Prince of Wales checks.
