Australia vs India, second T20I, 7.10pm AEDT: LIVE —

Australia is sweating on the fitness of captain Aaron Finch ahead of Sunday night’s must-win T20 clash against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground – and his absence could cause a major headache for Justin Langer’s men.

Finch hurt his right leg while batting in Friday’s 11-run defeat in Canberra, and was scheduled to undergo a scan on Saturday.

Langer gets HEATED with Boon

“A bit of a hip or a glute (buttock injury), I’m not sure at the moment,” he told reporters after the game.

“We’ll wait and see after the game. It progressively got worse throughout the game.”

If Finch is ruled out, it leaves Australia with a conundrum over who takes the captain’s armband in his absence.

Vice-captain Pat Cummins will also be missing from the remaining two games (Sunday and Tuesday) as he is rested.

Matthew Wade was named vice-captain on Friday, and has captained Victoria and Tasmania domestically as well as the Australian ODI squad back in 2017.

Fellow keeper Alex Carey, who has also been a deputy leader for Australia in white-ball games, is also in the squad.

Glenn Maxwell and Moises Henrique both have taken the armband in domestic competitions and would be in the mix.

But the most interesting potential name is Steve Smith. Former captain of Australia across all three formats, he was stripped of that honour following the 2018 ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

His two-year ban from leadership roles has now expired, making him eligible to lead the T20 side once again in what would be a shock return to the captaincy.

Kohli falls to RANK long hop

Another key selection dilemma revolves around the spinners. On Friday, Mitchell Swepson partnered Adam Zampa in a leg-spin duo – believed to be the first time since April 2006 that Australia fielded two specialist leggies in the same XI in any format (then Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill in a Bangladesh Test).

Zampa bagged 1/20 off four on Friday, and a nervous Swepson bagged the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli to finish with 1/21 from two overs.

But with Nathan Lyon joining the Australians as extra spin cover – and Cameron Green exiting the squad to play in a three-day Australia A clash starting Sunday – coach Justin Langer has additional options if he wants to change his line-up to take on the SCG.
